Saft’s commissioning service enables fast-track handover at Bibiyana gas field

In just three weeks from initial order to system startup, Saft delivered a comprehensive commissioning and capacity testing service at one of Bangladesh’s most important gas production facilities. This enables fast track handover of the plant’s battery rooms.

Expanding capacity

Chevron is one of the world’s leading integrated energy companies and is the largest producer of natural gas in Bangladesh. It operates three gas fields in the north east of the country including the Bibiyana plant. In 2014 Chevron carried out a $500 million extension to increase the facility’s production capacity. As part of this project it engaged Powell Industries Inc to provide packaged electrical power systems including the plant’s battery rooms. Powell’s scope of supply for Chevron at Bibiyana included a total of four plant battery rooms to provide six hours of backup power for critical equipment including UPS and switchgear essential to safe plant operation and process continuity.

Key features

  • Installed batteries and chargers inspection
  • Commissioning within three weeks of the order
  • Battery re-commissioning
  • Installation, commissioning and capacity tests carried
  • Acceptance test in accordance with IEC 62259

Key benefits

  • Saft’s full mobilisation from day one
  • Saft’s expertise led to greater reliability
  • Saft’s knowledge of application ensured smooth operation
  • Customer’s operators trained in a practical handover

Uptimax battery systems

Saft Uptimax New Generation Ni-Cd batteries are at the heart of power backup systems throughout the oil & gas exploration and production, utility and manufacturing industries. If the main power supply is lost, Uptimax ensures the continuity of mission-critical loads, facilitates safe shutdown processes, bridges to standby power and safeguards computer data.
Four Uptimax battery systems are installed at Chevron Bangladesh:

  • 2 Uptimax UPS batteries
  • 2 Uptimax Switchgear batteries

Immediate mobilization and fast-track commissioning

Chevron had already installed four Saft Uptimax battery systems at the site, and when Powell received the order for the packaged UPS and switchgear plant, Saft was called in to commission and test the battery systems to bring the battery room on line on a fast-track basis.
Speed was of the essence for this service contract. In just three weeks, Saft completed the commissioning and testing of the four Uptimax battery systems and also carried out testing on an additional six battery systems at a second Chevron site.

Meeting exacting standards

Saft offers battery installation, commissio-ning and capacity testing to the IEC 62259 standard for nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) batteries. Saft’s services enhance battery performance and maximize return on investment throughout the battery lifetime. The installation and commissioning service ensures rapid and safe start-up, for individual products or interfacing with a complete system.

It covers the implementation of appropriate factory settings, adjustments and overall system optimization.
As a manufacturer that covers the full spectrum from individual cells to complete fully integrated battery systems, Saft has the in-depth product knowledge and tools to ensure rapid and safe start-up of individual batteries or a complete system.

Quality and timeliness

Saft has a worldwide network of field technicians so that customers can call on resources close to their local operation for a speedy and knowledgeable response.

Saft’s experts did an outstanding job and Chevron was well-pleased both with the quality and timeliness of their performance.

Kelvin E. Wrenn, Field technical consultant at Powell’s service division
