A heart-warming tale from South Carolina

Defibrillators save lives.

With more AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) devices being installed across the world at sports clubs, gyms, and in public spaces, it is important that their battery packs provide the needed power when they are called upon.

In July of this year, at a YMCA wellness studio in Greenwood, South Carolina, it was an AED powered by a Saft battery pack that helped save the life of 77-year-old Phil Zigos when he suffered sudden cardiac arrest.

Mr Zigos had fallen from a stationary bike during exercise and quick-thinking onlookers identified that his chest wasn’t moving. They started to administer CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) before being joined by a YMCA employee, Sunni Carwile, who brought the on-site defibrillator.

The device, manufactured by ZOLL Medical with a Saft battery pack, was used to deliver shocks to Mr Zigos before the emergency services arrived. He was rushed to hospital and, thanks to the swift action of those around and the on-site AED, has fully recovered.
