Using real-time data to track containers and reduce operating costs

How do you track a large fleet of tank containers in a variable and sometimes potentially explosive atmosphere, in order to significantly reduce operational costs with real-time data?

This was the challenge given by Hoyer, a liquid goods transportation service provider, to a company of worldwide repute specializing in sensors and telemetrics.

Not only did the telematics have to display the tank’s position on a web portal to which the client had access across the whole supply chain, but also the temperature, pressure and filling levels too.

For a simple and seamless installation, location terminals and data sensors were installed on each of the containers, in addition to small tracking devices working on internal batteries.Supply Chain tracking

Supplying the client with a battery capable of functioning correctly in potentially explosive atmosphere and harsh weather conditions.

To guarantee the success of the project, both financially and technically, the client had to source the right battery to power the Communication and Location Terminal (CLT) in addition to the data sensors. They needed an ATEX-certified solution capable of meeting the necessary lifetime requirements of the device combined with total reliability in harsh, outdoor weather conditions and extreme temperatures.

The solution? The Saft M 20 Ex SV cell, certified for ATEX applications.

After a thorough study, our experts recommended the use of the M 20 EX SV, a comprehensive and bespoke ATEX-certified battery operating under temperatures from - 40°C to + 72°C. It’s high pulse capability enabled long range data transmission to track the containers across the globe.  Moreover, Saft’s 30-year track record in primary lithium battery technology allowed for risk mitigation thanks to a mature and reliable technology.
