Saft’s new IoT Smart Selector covers the whole world of applications for primary batteries

  • Online tool provides electronics developers with a fast-track route to evaluate the business case of their IoT solutions in any conceivable environment
  • Takes the hard work out of battery research by drawing on data from more than 10,000 use cases and 15,000 lifetime estimations

Saft has launched a new version of its Internet of Things (IoT) Smart Selector, the online tool to help developers quickly evaluate the viability of their projects. The selector is designed to recommend primary lithium battery solutions for a wide range of IoT applications.

Batteries have a big impact on the business case of IoT solutions. The choice of battery directly affects cost, and also impacts the size and weight of devices, and therefore the cost of manufacture and delivery. It also influences service life – a major factor that affects the cost of maintaining devices in the field.

A challenge is that specifying batteries requires knowledge of how battery performance and lifetime are influenced by external factors such as ambient temperature, electrical characteristics of electronic components and the type and frequency of wireless data transmission. Electrochemistry and internal construction are also important factors.

Isabelle Sourmey, Saft’s Application Engineer said: “We created the IoT Smart Selector so that developers can quickly find the best batteries for reliable and longlasting power in the field, where extreme conditions can limit the life of a typical consumer battery. An IoT concept might need thousands of sensors to be deployed, making replacement of batteries extremely costly and impractical. By identifying the right battery, developers can save lots of time and efforts.”

The IoT Smart Selector takes developers through a seven-step process to identify suitable battery solutions for almost any conceivable application and environment in the world. It combines this with data from the field, as well as 10,000 use cases and 15,000 battery lifetime calculations to generate a power consumption profile.

Saft has an additional tool to support second-stage development in partnership with Wisebatt, the simulation platform for IoT devices. Wisebatt for Saft is a free version of the platform for electronic engineers who want to build virtual prototypes of their devices.

The IoT Smart Selector is available at https://saft4u.saftbatteries.com/en/iot.
