Making the most of Nordic wind power
One of the critical actions in fighting climate change is to increase the share of renewable energy. In this context, wind power is leading the charge and has spurred a boom in the Nordic countries, including Finland.
In its drive for clean, decentralized energy production, TuuliWatti Oy is that country’s leading wind developer and operator. TuuliWatti has an installed wind power above 300 MW across 11 sites. It will use Saft energy storage systems (ESS) to overcome the natural variability and intermittency of the wind. The operator recently placed an order for three of Saft’s new Intensium Max 20 High Energy (HE) containers for a wind farm in Viinamäki, northwest Finland.
Using a technique called frequency regulation, the ESS will inject and absorb energy to compensate for the constant changes in wind power output from the wind farm. As a result, TuuliWatti will be able to deliver high quality renewable power to the grid.
According to Tommi Riski, Portfolio Manager for Power at TuuliWatti, “TuuliWatti’s goal is to be the leading wind power developer and producer in the Arctic region and Saft’s high-energy containers will help us achieve this at Viinamäki by improving the competitiveness of wind power. They provide a fast response in challenging environmental conditions, as well as the energy storage capacity to support grid stability, allowing us to adjust the output of our wind farm in the twinkling of an eye.”

Tommi Riski TuuliWatti Portfolio Manager for PowerThe contract win for the 21 MW wind farm is an early commercial success for Saft’s latest lithium-ion (Li-ion) ESS. The Li-ion battery system is sized to provide an energy storage capacity of 6.6 MWh and deliver 5.6 MW of power over a 15-year lifetime. The system comes in three fully-integrated, standard 20-foot shipping containers of 2.2 MWh each.
Saft launched the Intensium Max HE to address the majority of grid, renewables, commercial, and industrial applications that require large-scale ESS solutions with discharge times of around two hours. It offers more than twice the energy storage capacity of previous Saft containers and can be used as a building block to create large-scale installations. In its standard version, it offers up to 2 MW power and 2.5 MWh energy storage capacity and integrates Li-ion battery modules, control, thermal management, and safety systems.
