Grandpuits Platform: TotalEnergies inaugurates the largest solar power plant in Île-de-France
Paris, July 7, 2023 - TotalEnergies inaugurated the region’s largest solar power plant, as well as a battery energy storage system, on the Grandpuits site, with Valérie Pécresse, President of Île-de-France region in attendance. These two projects are part of the TotalEnergies strategy to transform the Grandpuits refinery into an oil-free, multi-energy platform.
With a surface area of 12 hectares and a 25-megawatt peak (MWp) capacity, the Grandpuits solar plant generates 31 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of renewable electricity per year, the equivalent to the electricity consumption of 19,000 people. This production is made possible by the installation of 46,000 solar panels on steerable structures called trackers, which are designed to maximize solar energy capture throughout the entire day.
Along with the solar plant, TotalEnergies commissioned a 43-megawatt-hours (MWh) battery energy storage system. It is made up of 22 lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery containers designed and installed by its affiliate Saft, a company specialized in high-tech battery design for industry. It is an addition to the program initiated in 2020 as part of the RTE call for tenders, bringing the total storage capacity of the three sites operated by TotalEnergies to 129 MW. By contributing to the network’s frequency regulation and consumption peak management, particularly in winter, Saft batteries play a key role in energy supply safety and electricity production-consumption balance in France.
“The Grandpuits solar plant and its energy storage system are a great example of our commitment to renewable energy in France and our ability to develop associated energy storage solutions,” said Thierry Muller, Director of TotalEnergies Renewables France. “These facilities are the product of the close collaboration between local stakeholders, network managers, and public authorities in France who contributed to the achievement of objectives set by the multi-year energy planning, and I thank them all for their efforts.”

TotalEnergies and renewables electricity
As part of its ambition to get to net zero by 2050, TotalEnergies is building a portfolio of activities in electricity and renewables. By the first half of 2023, TotalEnergies' gross renewable electricity generation installed capacity was 18 GW. TotalEnergies will continue to expand this business to reach 35 GW of gross production capacity from renewable sources and storage by 2025, and then 100 GW by 2030 with the objective of being among the world's top 5 producers of electricity from wind and solar energy.
