Compact nickel battery
Saft’s new Compact nickel batteries to streamline footprint and maintenance budgets for industrial sites:
- This new range of nickel batteries is designed to support critical systems in remote and hard-to-reach industrial installations
- Operators can upgrade directly from VRLA batteries in the same footprint and using existing chargers
- Compact nickel battery solutions offer a long operational life of over 20 years, at least 3 times more than VRLA batteries.
Saft’s new Compact range of maintenance-free nickel batteries for industrial backup can be fitted in the same footprint and share charging protocols as lead-acid batteries. As a result, operators can upgrade to nickel technology in their existing cabinets and immediately improve reliability and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).
The Compact nickel battery systems are directly compatible with valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) battery chargers. Normally, nickel batteries require a boost charge to reach a fully charged state. However, the new Compact Ni-Cd range requires only a single step charging voltage of 1.39 Volts per cell. This makes it possible to use them as a direct drop-in replacement for existing VRLA batteries. This development builds on Saft’s successful introduction of similar innovative features in its Uptimax nickel battery solutions.
Features & Benefits
The Compact maintenance-free nickel batteries are designed to support essential control systems and other critical equipment in remote and hard-to-access locations in offshore oil and gas, utility, manufacturing, and rail trackside sites.
Manufactured in Valdosta, GA (USA), the Compact nickel battery has a small footprint and are up to 30 percent lighter than VRLA and operate in temperatures from -20 to +50°C and tolerate -50°C to +70°C.
Nickel electrochemistry is proven to help operators achieve the lowest possible Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) thanks to a long life of over 20 years, predictable performance and high reliability.
Lead-acid batteries are more expensive over the long term due to replacement and maintenance costs. In addition, they need regular testing and can suffer poor reliability due to ‘sudden death’, where they can lose all capacity unexpectedly.
In contrast, Compact nickel battery technology ensures a long, sustainable, and totally predictable service life that enables operators to focus on running their installations.
- Single step charging voltage of 1.39 Volts per cell
- Compact L ENERGY range from 83 to 185 Amp-hours (Ah)
- Compact M MEDIUM POWER range from 76 to 180 Amp-hours (Ah)
- Exceptional energy density: 100 Watt-hours per liter (Wh/l)
- Long operational life >20 years
- Operate in temperatures from -20 to +50°C
- Tolerate temperatures from -50°C to +70°C
An Environmentally Sound Solution
- Manufacturing process and recycling capability ensure lowest CO2 footprint
- Wide temperature range, saving energy consumption of battery rooms (HVAC, Heating)
- Long operational life of over 20 years, at least 3 times longer than lead-acid batteries
- Lowest total cost of ownership
Closing the loop on responsible production
Saft operates the only plant in the world that produces nickel-cadmium batteries incorporating metals that have been reclaimed on site from spent batteries, reducing their eco-footprint. Recycling Ni-Cd batteries is a complex process that involves separating the nickel, cobalt and cadmium from the electrodes, a process perfected by Saft’s plant in Oskarshamn, Sweden – the only one worldwide involved in both the recycling and manufacturing of Ni-Cd batteries and incorporating recycled metals.
Saft operates a network of over 30 bring back points worldwide that receive spent Ni-Cd batteries produced at Saft factories, as well as those made by its competitors. The bring back point located in northern Europe brings these used batteries back to Oskarshamn, minimizing transportation. Other bring back points work with other fully permitted recycling partners selected by Saft to ensure that the recovery rates mandated imposed by the EU battery directive are met.
Saft was awarded a top rating in 2021 by Ecovadis, a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) rating organization for sustainable development performance, scoring in the 96th percentile on: environment, labor and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement.
